2019 Fast Pitch Grant Recipients

 

After School All Stars

After-School All-Stars requested support for their full comprehensive after-school programs to keep at-risk Dallas youth safe and engaged during the “danger zone” hours of 3-6pm. Their pitch exhibited how the funds would give students a healthy snack, academic support from school-day teachers, hands-on STEAM-learning, physical activity, and academic enrichment.

Children At Risk, Inc

CHILDREN AT RISK presented on the growing childhood obesity epidemic and how recess helps increase physical activity among elementary-aged students. Studies indicate however that 40% of districts have reduced or eliminated recess, disproportionately affecting children from low-income communities. C@R raises awareness about recess benefits among school administrators and works with them to implement sound recess policies.

Equest was seeking a grant to support the Equest Competition Program which gives special needs clients an opportunity to experience being part of a team and the benefits of competition.

Mental Health America of Greater Dallas

Mental Health America of Greater Dallas was seeking to expand their anti-victimization program to 15 at-risk schools. Due to the continued cut-back of school counselors, teachers, and mental health professionals, schools are unable to provide the resources and trainings to teach children the skills to protect themselves from abuse and violence.

New Friends New Life

New Friends New Life was seeking a grant to support the manKINDness Project, which empowers boys on school sports teams to become leaders by modeling healthy attitudes towards girls and each other. Led by men, this workshop teaches how boys’ treatment of girls impacts the socialization of abuse, and how to positively influence treatment of girls and women, preventing future exploitation.

Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children

Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children told us about how each year, the prosthetics department at SRH fits and fabricates specialized prosthetic devices for more than 300 children with missing or different limbs.  The funds would be used to create custom limbs to help young athletes participate as equals in sports activities with peers.
